When I started there were only two of us Samoan women novelists in the world and I love that today there’s so many many more of us writing “stories by us, about us and for us”. Something I’ve enjoyed doing over the last 15 years since I published my first novel – is help other hopeful writers with their books. Everything from advice about getting their book to the finish line ie being able to type THE END (and be happy about it!), guidance on their different publishing pathways, or ideas about how to share a book with readers. For me it’s a combination of drawing on my experiences as a writer/editor/publisher/distributor/marketer and as a teacher. I learn something new every time I work with another writer and its exciting to see their books become real.
But its gotten to where I dont have capacity to advise everyone who writes in requesting help with their books. And the time that goes into helping other writers is time taken away from my own work and family.
